With the summer heat in full swing, your face shouldn't have to suffer. Here are a few tips to beat the heat, literally, and step out with your best face forward.

Where the Girls Are

When I first stepped onto my annual cruise with my mother I wondered if my girlfriend and I, who were on our first cruise together as a couple, would secretly go overboard one night at the hands of a not so accepting passenger. I was pleased to find out that not only were my thoughts of involuntary disembarkation ridiculous, I found that the staff on our Royal Caribbean Cruise were more than accepting. Nothing was said about the two women staying in a queen sized bed, or the bottle of champagne and strawberries that were sent to our room as a welcome gift for my girlfriend.

Eat More, Lose More

So it looks like I have your attention now! Yes, I know you must think I’m absolutely crazy and have no idea what I’m talking about, but just keep reading, this is not a dream. Most people believe that when you are trying to lose weight the best thing for you to do is eat less, when in fact, it’s better for you to do the complete opposite. In order for you to successfully lose weight you need to eat more often throughout the day.

Eating more often helps you burn more calories instead of storing them as fat, which in the long run can help you with your ultimate weight loss goal. It is important to eat between five or six small meals a keeps your body from going into starvation mode – a undesired consequence of not consuming enough calories thus burning less calories to ensure your body has the fuel it needs until your next meal.

Living A Broad

I have come to realize that I just can't hang out with people who have nothing to lose!  Now, I don't want to be confused for a punk, but I'm certainly not a 'basic broad'!

Everyone knows someone who believes in 'YOLO' (you only live once— the basic broad's 'Carpe Diem' — and you find yourself having to question whether or not y'all can go to the club (hood bar), a fancy dinner (Red Lobster), or even to the crib together (some hot ass apartment that you can smoke inside of).  I'm not saying that those things, in moderation, of course, are all bad -- although Red Lobster is a little salty for me. It's the combination, or better yet, the frequency that makes you question if you can kick it regularly. The key is you have to fully know who you're dealing with to successfully pull off one of these relationships.

I don't just mean intimate relationships. If the person described above is your sister, sisters friend, first cousin or aunt, she doesn't count!  That's family, and mentioning the possibility of finer accommodations to her is considered 'judging'.  You don't want to be the "uppity chick who always has something to say".  Leave the below suggestions for distant friends, old school mates, or even coworkers. Plus, if you're ever down and out, you can usually stay with these women, and their multiple kids, for an extended period of time. So it's a win-win.

Sapphire Magazine has received two emails from the United Kingdom stating that a Sapphire staff member contacted them offering them a no obligation subscription to Sapphire Magazine. They mentioned a survey they did not remember taking, and one woman was told that she also won a gas card. To have the magazine and/or gas card mailed to you, they required a credit/debit card to be charged a small amount of money for shipping.

THIS IS A SCAM.

Sapphire Magazine, www.sapphire-magazine.com, is a FREE online publication, and no Sapphire staff member will call you requesting money. Please do not give your personal information to anyone pretending to be from Sapphire Magazine.

A Supreme Week for LGBT History

Last week’s Supreme Court hearings were a momentous occasion in LGBTQ history and a huge step toward progress. On Tuesday, March 26th, thousands, including Sapphire, gathered in the nation’s capital to rally in support of marriage equality and the repeal of Proposition 8!

Proposition 8, passed via ballot in 2008, overturned California’s ruling on same sex marriage, limiting legal marriage to the traditional definition of a union between a man and woman.  Consequently, newly wed same sex couples in California were no longer recognized as legally married in the state.  Having had their marriage revoked, two same sex couples filed a lawsuit against the state of California, claiming that Proposition 8 impedes on the civil rights of same sex Californians. The case is now in the hands of the Supreme Court, where Justices are expressing a mixture of support and opposition. If the Supreme Court decides that Prop 8 is, in fact, unconstitutional, a precedent will be set in which states are no longer able to legally limit the definition of marriage.

Orlando's Other Wonderland

You can hardly believe it. Rihanna is on stage in front of you singing her latest hit, but her eyes are glued directly on you. You slowly look behind you, there has to be someone else she is looking at. Nope, she is looking at you! As if it were magic, the crowd disappears as she jumps off stage. You want to pinch yourself as you watch her slowly strut towards you to the beat. All of the sudden it happens. Her song starts to disappear as you groggily open your eyes to the inside of a hotel room. Where are you?! With Rihanna still pounding in your head, you jump out of bed and throw on some clothes. You seem to be alone, but the other side of the bed looks like you had company last night. Was it her?! You run to the bathroom to make sure she's in there and didn't leave as you slept, but you realize you're all alone. Disappointed, you open your blinds to sulk on your balcony; and as if a miracle, you see hundreds of half-naked, tan women dancing to that same Rihanna tune by the hotel pool.

You slowly start to remember. You broke up with your girlfriend last week and your best friends suggested you come with them to Orlando for Girls in Wonderland (GIW). Since the hotel tends to book up so quickly, they reserved a second room "just in case", and thought it would be a perfect way for you to get over that "devil" who broke your heart. Reluctantly, you said yes, but what had you gotten yourself into?

So, let me start by saying your core consist of more than just your abs, so this challenge will extend beyond crunches! This workout is a mixture of ab, back, butt, hips, and cardio exercises. We all know it’s about that time for bathing suits and shorts to be pulled from the back of your closet and make their yearly appearance, so why not start preparing now?

The challenge mixes exercises that will progressively get harder throughout the month, so push yourself to do your best each day, and in the end you will surprise yourself with what you were able to accomplish. Make sure you download the calendar here for the daily workout regimen. I am going to demonstrate some of the workouts, and if there is a modification, I'll show you that as well. This challenge will have the best results if you add in some regular cardio, and stay away from the modifications

1.   Squats: Begin with your feet shoulder width apart, and slowly sit back as if you are going to sit in a chair. Remember to push most of your weight into your heels! You can do squats in front of the edge of a chair or the couch if you feel uncomfortable.

*When doing the squat, go from a squatting position right into a jump.
